Water Softener
The device is composed by a cylinder and a salt tank. The majority of the water softeners have the same principle of operation. The device modifies the chemical characteristics of water by eliminating calcium and magnesium to decrease the water hardness and to avoid the formation of limestone and tartar. Calcium and magnesium are exchanged against sodium via a resin contained in the cylinder. When the resin is saturated with calcium, this resin is rinsed using a brine contained in the tank. The sodium absorbed by water will quickly damage the elements of the water-heater. The harder the water, the more sodium will be found, and more quickly the elements will be corroded.
Crawl space
A dirt or gravel space below the main floor, 1 to 2 meters high, that is not insulated, heated or ventilated. Crawl spaces are usually found in homes built before the early 1940s or much earlier.
